They have nothing to do with a farm really. They are small houses plotted around a castle or mansion on an estate where the help used to live in the middle ages. Now farmhouses represent a pleasant retreat for families and groups who want some peace and quiet and a more rural vacation setting.
In Italy the most numerous farmhouses are located in Tuscany. Many of the estates are wine-making properties with acres upon acres of vineyards. Some also produce olive oil and offer wine and olive oil tasting to guests.
Most of the estates are family run, though not all of them. A typical farmhouse property layout includes a larger main house, one or two floors, surrounded by smaller houses containing one or two apartments. Farmhouses are usually self-catering and some properties offer restaurant services on the grounds.
For large wedding parties with children, farmhouses are the perfect solution for a Wedding in Italy. If you are having a Civil Ceremony your estate may be even walking distance to the town hall, so you really get that feeling of being prince and princess for a day, your townsmen (guests) following you to the wedding hall then all back to your castle for a grand celebration together!
